Inside a Korean First Birthday — 돌잔치, 돌잡이, and Five Gold Rings
A rented hall, an MC with a microphone, and a one-year-old choosing her own future.
Last weekend 팅쌤 held 돌잔치 (doljanchi) — her daughter 윤서's first birthday party. In Korea, a first birthday is not just a birthday. Long ago it wasn't easy for a baby to grow up healthy until that day, so families celebrated it enormously, and that celebration got its own name: 돌 (dol). Which is why a Korean first birthday can look less like a kids' party and more like a wedding.
The centerpiece is a ritual called 돌잡이 (doljabi). Several objects are placed in front of the baby, and whichever one she grabs is said to predict her future: thread for a long life, money for wealth, a pencil for doing well in school. Modern tables add a microphone for a singer or a golf ball for an athlete. Before it starts, the MC asks the parents what they'd like the baby to grab — dad said studying, 팅쌤 said a golf ball.
And then there are the gifts. Guests at a Korean first birthday don't bring toys; they bring gold. 윤서 went home with five 돌반지 gold rings and a bracelet. Watch what she grabbed.

Three moments in this vlog were completely unscripted — the MC, the toast, and the sound every Korean parent makes at a camera. Here's how far real Korean sits from the textbook.
