Learn Hangul: 10 Basic Vowels

Hangul, the Korean alphabet, consists of consonants and vowels. In this lesson, we’ll focus on the 10 basic vowels:

ㅏ, ㅑ, ㅓ, ㅕ, ㅗ, ㅛ, ㅜ, ㅠ, ㅡ, ㅣ

Pronunciation Tips

  • ㅏ (a) / ㅑ (ya) – “a” in father, add ㅣ for “ya”
  • ㅓ (eo) / ㅕ (yeo) – “aw” in saw, add ㅣ for “yaw”
  • ㅗ (o) / ㅛ (yo) – “o” in go, add ㅣ for “yo”
  • ㅜ (u) / ㅠ (yu) – “oo” in moon, add ㅣ for “yu”
  • ㅡ (eu) – Unique Korean sound, like a tense “uh”
  • ㅣ (i) – “ee” in see

How to Remember

  • Vertical vowels: ㅏ, ㅑ, ㅓ, ㅕ
  • Horizontal vowels: ㅗ, ㅛ, ㅜ, ㅠ
  • Paired vowels: Adding an extra stroke makes a “y” sound (ㅏ → ㅑ, ㅓ → ㅕ, etc.)

Next Steps

These vowels combine with consonants to form Korean words. Keep practicing, and you’ll be reading Hangul in no time!
