FAQ
What is my Korean age?
It depends on which system you mean. 만 나이 counts from your actual birthdate — the age on ID cards, contracts and official documents. 세는 나이 starts at 1 when you are born, and everyone gains a year together on January 1st. 연 나이 is the current year minus your birth year, with no birthday needed.
Do Koreans still use Korean age?
Since June 28, 2023, under the Age Unification Act (만 나이 통일법), 만 나이 is the single legal standard, except a few laws that still use 연 나이. 세는 나이 hasn't disappeared — you'll still hear Koreans ask each other's age the traditional way in casual conversation.
Which Korean age is used for the drinking age and military service?
연 나이 — the current year minus your birth year, with no birthday needed. Korean law uses it for things like the legal drinking and smoking age and the military service age.
